Building Confidence Through Sports in San Pedro International College

Embracing Individual Potential

During the current academic year, the Laude San Pedro International College Physical Education (PE) department has undertaken a distinctive initiative, concentrating on instilling confidence among all students through competitive sports. This effort has centred around increased inclusion, with over 2000 more opportunities provided compared to the previous year for students to participate in organized competitions against other schools and within our recently introduced school house contests – a program aimed at diversifying our sporting events and increasing overall participation.

This reflects our commitment to ensuring every student has the chance to engage in sports, creating a richer learning experience. At the core of this approach is inclusivity. Breaking away from tradition, the PE department has organized more inclusive events, ensuring active involvement from all students. This shift not only enhances the fun in sports but also facilitates experiential learning, allowing students to navigate the dynamics of competitive situations.

The emotions experienced in sports, from nervousness to excitement, go beyond the playing field, becoming transferable skills useful in various life scenarios, including professional interviews. Through active participation in these events, students develop the ability to manage these emotions, building the resilience needed to face challenges in different circumstances.

The impact of these competitions goes beyond sports dynamics. While our school has historically excelled with elite teams, the most noticeable effects have been seen among students who might not have been selected before. By pitting them against similarly skilled opponents from other schools, these students have found an environment that fosters success in competitive situations tailored to their specific skill sets. This tailored approach has resulted in increased participation in lunchtime clubs and greater enthusiasm during Physical Education Lessons, reflecting a tangible boost in confidence across our student body.

Guided by ISP principles, which emphasize the unique potential in each individual, this year’s focus on expanding access to authentic sports competition aligns with our institutional philosophy. Beyond refining sporting prowess, we are witnessing a simultaneous development in confidence, equipping our students to shine not only in athletic pursuits but across various dimensions of life. The introduction of the new school house system this year has significantly contributed to our overall goal of increased participation in competitions, further diversifying our sporting events and contributing to the positive atmosphere of increased engagement in sports throughout the school.
