As part of Laude San Pedro’s Year 12 Extended Curriculum Project, designed to develop life competencies beyond the A Level classroom, a group of nine sixth‑form students have come together to form an Events and Outreach Team. The group meets weekly with their teacher and, over the course of the year, the students have been pleasantly surprised by how much the challenge has helped them grow in confidence, particularly as they had never previously worked as part of a small fundraising team. The experienceThe students are part of a team responsible for leading the organisation, planning, and execution of key school events in support of a chosen charitable cause.CommitmentThe group meets every Wednesday during Period 7 in the school Boardroom, with additional time spent between meetings completing assigned tasks.Choosing the causeThe students themselves chose both the event and the charity, deciding to support the Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer.Teamwork and rolesEach student was assigned a role based on their interests, skills, and level of commitment:Chairperson: IanMarketing and Communications: Manuela and VanessaLogistics and Infrastructure: OliverFinance and Treasury: DiegoCatering and Landing Page: MabelleDecoration, Concept and Design: Lia and AnthonySkills and competencies developedThrough this project, students have developed a wide range of essential life skills, including:LeadershipOrganisation and time managementPlanning and problem-solvingCommunicationMedia, digital and public relations skillsCollaboration and teamworkThe charity gala dinnerThe students have launched a charity gala dinner taking place on Saturday, 27 April, supported by staff and parent volunteers. The Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer is a remarkable foundation whose mission is to “relieve and prevent, as far as possible, the suffering caused by cancer, regardless of people’s place of residence or personal circumstances.”The evening will begin with a welcome cocktail in the new dining area, followed by an elegant dinner in a transformed school gymnasium. In collaboration with Ms Guarneri and Mr Prentice, the team has confirmed a programme of music and dance performances between courses.Mabelle, supported by the wider team, selected an outstanding catering company and worked on choosing the menu. Alongside fine wines and a cocktail bar, the event promises to be a truly memorable evening. A raffle and auction will also take place, with the aim of raising thousands of euros for the charity. To support the event, Mabelle created a dedicated landing page, which continues to evolve as more details are added throughout the week.Ongoing support and reflectionIn the crucial weeks leading up to the event, the student team is actively building support. A teacher and parent support group meets every Wednesday at 4:30 pm, immediately following the student meeting. Company sponsors have already come forward to support the initiative.Diego, acting as financial director, prepared both the budget and the business plan for the event.Students have written reflections at the end of each half‑term, and as the year has progressed they have adapted, learned, grown in confidence, and pushed themselves beyond their comfort zones. Organising an event of this scale requires courage and determination, and we hope the skills developed through this experience will support them in future studies and careers. We are incredibly proud of all nine students and hope that the Events and Outreach Project continues to grow year after year.
