Embracing Individual PotentialDuring the current academic year, the Physical Education (PE) Department at Laude San Pedro International College has undertaken a distinctive initiative focused on building confidence in all students through competitive sport. This approach has placed a strong emphasis on inclusion, with over 2,000 additional opportunities provided compared to the previous year for students to take part in organised competitions, both against other schools and through our newly introduced school house competitions. This programme aims to diversify sporting events and significantly increase overall participation, reflecting our commitment to ensuring that every student has the opportunity to engage in sport and enjoy a richer educational experience. At the heart of this initiative is inclusivity. Moving away from more traditional models, the PE department has introduced a wider range of inclusive events designed to actively involve all students. This shift not only enhances enjoyment in sport but also supports experiential learning, allowing students to experience and understand the dynamics of competition first hand. The emotions encountered through sport — from nervousness to excitement — extend beyond the playing field and become transferable skills applicable to many real‑life situations, including professional interviews. By taking part in these competitive experiences, students learn to manage their emotions and develop the resilience needed to face challenges in a variety of contexts. The impact of these competitions goes well beyond sporting performance. While the school has a strong tradition of success with elite teams, the most significant progress has been observed among students who may not traditionally have been selected for competitive sport. By matching these students against peers of similar ability from other schools, they have found an environment that enables success in competitive situations tailored to their individual skill levels. This personalised approach has led to increased participation in lunchtime clubs and greater engagement during PE lessons, clearly reflecting a boost in confidence across the student body.Guided by ISP principles, which emphasise the unique potential of every individual, this year’s focus on expanding access to authentic sporting competition closely aligns with our wider educational philosophy. Beyond improving athletic skills, we are seeing a parallel development in student confidence, empowering young people to succeed not only in sport but across many areas of life. The introduction of the new school house system has played a key role in achieving our aim of increased participation in competitions. It has further diversified sporting opportunities and contributed to the positive, inclusive atmosphere now evident throughout the school’s sporting culture.Tom CourtneyHead of Physical Education
